I awoke to bittersweet meloncholy on Saturday morning realizing I had spent the night in the comfort of my own bed rather than the less-than-comfortable cot/bunks of Shadow Pines campgrounds. The chatter and laughter of my children’s play mixed with the sights and sounds of camp that still lingered in my minds eye. This years Arizona District Youth Camp was incredible and effected me deeply.
This year at Arizona Senior Youth Camp I was reminded of how important the senior youth camp experience really is. Camp allows young people to escape from the distractions of everyday life, if even for only a few days. Camp provides a safe and nurturing environment where Apostolic young people can spend time talking with, playing sports with and worshipping with other Apostolic young people. Camp encourages Apostolic young people to rekindle their passion for Christ, to reaffirm their salvation, to confirm their calling and to exercise their spiritual muscles.
I myself was an Arizona Senior Youth Camp camper in years past and I got to thinking about how much my spiritual walk had been influenced by my times at Arizona senior youth camps. I started going to Arizona senior camps around 1990 at the age of thirteen and I made a lot of camp memories through-out the years.
Arizona senior camps were the birthplace of many of my long term Christian friendships. In fact, today my closest friends are brothers who I met and got to know in Arizona youth camps. Arizona campgrounds (located in Prescott at the time) were the battlefield where I fought many battles, gaining victory over countless struggles. Arizona senior camp experiences include my personal Bethel (Genesis 28:10-19) & Peniel (Genesis 32:25-31) experiences - places where I learned to recognize God’s presence, and where I learned to seek Him out, and to cling desperately to Him in times of great need.
It is my great hope that 2008 Arizona District Senior Youth Camp was someones Bethel or Peniel. I look forward to the coming year and seeing all that God has in store for the young people of the Arizona District coming to fruition!! God bless you guys!!
